DOUBLING
Josée Dubeau

September 10 - October 26, 2008
Opening: Wednesday September 10, 6 - 8 pm

My project centres on the space we inhabit and transform. In this world of levels and lines, I let myself be guided by the functions of our organisation of space, be they drive-through ATM machines, cookie-cutter shopping malls with parking for 20,000 cars, the fast-food chains and gas stations along our highways, multiplex cinemas or office cubicles all in a line.

A stranger to this reality, I constantly withdraw from this world that is offered to me. In the comfort of models of spatial organisation I construct my relations with others and with the environment.

My installations made out of wooden rods draw on a variety of activities that set us apart individually and collectively to recreate environments that bring out the nomenclature of the architecture. They reproduce reality with the geometrical regularity of a three-dimensional vectorial drawing. In the absence of surface and volume, the space being mimicked appears in its fragile transparency: the absence of colour and texture leads us to believe, from an existential point of view, in the conception of a detached and unattached world, like that of a scale model.
