Mandate
AXENÉO7 strives to be a site for exchange between local, national and international artists. Its primary mandate is the dissemination of contemporary practices belonging to the realm of visual art. Since 1983, it has enabled the presentation of exhibitions by artists from a wide variety of horizons. AXENÉO7 is a site for meetings and experimentation revolving around the renewal of visual language which foster the creation and presentation of new works. Its artist-in-residence program plays an important role in this sense by providing invited artists with a physical and human environment that can influence their work.
With its three exhibition rooms, a residency, a studio and a workshop, AXENÉO7 brings together primarily artists, along with art historians, writers and teaching professionals. Mainly run by visual and media art artists, AXENÉO7 is dedicated to improving the production and presentation conditions of new works. The centre makes it its duty to receive each artist as an important guest : it assumes promotion, exhibition set-up costs and technical assistance for projects and exhibitions. The payment of fees according to the standards recommended by the RAAV (Regroupement des Artistes en Arts Visuels du Québec) has always been an absolute commitment.
AXENÉO7’s programming is elaborated by artists and art professionals who conceive and select activities that are at times closely associated with public talks, seminars and publications. It has also chosen to serve as a bridge between different generations of artists, supporting emerging practices and more established ones.
